Kendall Reading Program – All The Highlights From our 1st Grade Readers at John Tuck Elementary

February 28th, 2025 by

The Kendall Reading Program is well underway at John Tuck Elementary, where Miss Nye’s 1st Grade Class just wrapped up their 6-week program with the Kendall Cares team, including Kendall the golden retriever! Kendall Cares partnered with John Tuck Elementary to develop a program that encourages students’ learning through reading and writing while providing a memorable experience. This intelligent group of 1st Graders got the opportunity to read to Kendall every Friday for 6 weeks, while also being tasked with hitting reading minutes at home. Every week, Kendall gave the students prizes for reaching their goals, starting with a plush Kendall Reading Dog to make sure they always had someone to read to. From there, the kids received capes to encourage their imagination, collars & tags to dress up their pup, and accessories such as t-shirts as a token of their hard work.

Over the 6-week program, we are so proud of the improvements each student made with not only their reading skills, but confidence as well. While Kendall was in the classroom, the kids got to choose which books they read to Kendall, including the length and difficulty of them. Each week, the students chose more challenging books and even ended the program with writing their very own story. A lot of the stories were about the superpowers they gained, and how they would use them to help others! We will miss our 1st Graders in Miss Nye’s class, but Kendall is visiting a new group of students at John Tuck, starting a new program with them! Miss Gilbertson’s class is focusing on their writing skills and will receive a new prompt from Kendall each week to write their own series of children’s books. We are so excited to hear what these imaginative, intelligent, students come up with!
